The flat roof
Flat roofs are roofs with a roof pitch of less than 10°. Some sources cite an upper limit of 5°. German building regulations do not contain any clear statement regarding the roof pitch of flat roofs. As a rule, the roof covering of flat roofs is designed as a roof waterproofing. In extreme cases, flat roofs are exposed to external influences (weather and environmental factors). High heating by the sun and sudden cooling by rain lead to significant movement in the outer skin. Roof openings such as ventilators, skylights and other structures as well as wall connections are particularly subject to stress. This determines whether the existing waterproofing can withstand the load. Leaks occur particularly frequently at roof openings. Another weak point of roof waterproofing is the embrittlement of the roof covering. Materials that are still elastic in summer often lose their elasticity as the cold increases. Older membranes become brittle due to what is known as plasticizer migration.
